NESEA BuildingEnergy 10 Workshop

To Air is Human, To Pipe Divine...

Building science deals with constructing homes that are energy efficiency and durable. New materials, new construction techniques, and new insight into what works and what doesn't have lead to significant changes over the last decade.

The Northeast Sustainable Energy Association (NESEA) is at the forefront of these effort, and their annual building energy conference is a place to find the latest information.

This coming March 9th, I will be presenting a full day workshop at the NESEA "BuildEnergy 10" conference in Boston. It will discuss how the latest hydronic heating technology can be integrated into modern low energy use buildings. The approaches used are not necessarily the same as those employed in more typical North American construction.

Low energy buildings and hydronics can be complementary IF the right techniques are used. For example, it's not just about installing radiant floor heating in every building. That might even be counterproductive to ensuring comfort and energy efficiency. This workshop will discuss why that's the case, and show you better alternatives.

Here are the concepts we will discuss:

* The concept of distribution efficiency and why it's important
* Ultra-low power distribution systems, whole house energy delivery on 40 watts or less&
* Keeping It Simple: State-of-the-art performance without complexity
* Integrating modern hydronics into systems using renewable energy heat sources (solar, geothermal, solid-fuel)
* Hydronics specifically taylored to low energy use houses
